Needle Rock Originals is a new venture coming out of Needle Rock where we are making brand new pieces of quality furniture, such as our “Aber Chaise” Bespoke Chaise Longue, from our workshop in Wales, built to last a lifetime.

Using wood sourced locally and time-honoured traditional upholstery, we are creating beautiful bespoke furniture, emphasising quality and creating a legacy for our customers to hand down to their future generations.

The ‘Aber Chaise’

The first offering from Needle Rock Originals is the ‘Aber Chaise‘. Since Needle Rock was founded in 2013, 100’s of pieces of antique and vintage furniture has passed through the workshop door. Our favourite pieces have always been, and continue to be, the chaise longue.

Steeped in history and luxury, the chaise longue has long been the seat of choice for the decadent and the distinguished, offering a perfect fusion of aristocratic elegance and leisurely indulgence.

Using time-honoured practices, we are taking all the best bits of the chaises we’ve seen over the years and making our very own. In doing so, this enables us to give our customers a guarantee. Made with skill, love and attention to detail, the ‘Aber Chaise‘ takes more than 100 hours to build, and is built to last for more than 100 years.

Meet the maker, skilled artisan Ali.

The Needle Rock Lathe! It's on this machine that the chaise legs get turned.

The wooden frame is built to your order specifications either in-house, or with our trusted joiners. Whatever length and width you desire, your frame is built especially for you. Choose built in or removeable legs. Remember, your ‘Aber Chaise’ is built EXACTLY for you!

Each ‘Aber Chaise’ is made with numerous coil springs, each one connected to the webbing base with FOUR independent attachments and lashed together to form a strong matrix.

An independent sprung edge using natural bamboo cane gives the unsupported chaise edges a good, robust structure. This provides a strong and supportive seat structure.

The first stuffing, using fibres from coconut husk, is incorporated into the main structure of the ‘Aber Chaise’.

Time honoured techniques are used to ensure this stuffing stays where it needs to be!

The softness of your chaise is derived from horsehair as it gives a soft and bouncy feel.

We tease the horsehair apart using our antique 'carding' machine that would have been used on the streets of France in the 1800's.

A layer of calico is added which is future upholsterer’s delight. (P.s We forgot to take a photo of this stage, so borrowed this one from a previous job).

FACT: At least 100 hours of skilled labour goes into the making of every ‘Aber Chaise‘.

As of March 2025, Ali has trained two young people in the craft of upholstery. Rosie & Jason work alongside Ali in the Needle Rock workshop, and plans are progressing for these two youngsters to run the businesss when Ali decides it’s time to step aside.

Our long-term vision is, not to just have furniture lasting more than 100 years, to provide a ‘Needle Rock Training Academy‘ that will persist longer than our furniture giving young people the opportunity to thrive in a craft-orientated career.

Needle Rock have connections to purchase almost any designer fabric. With an extensive selection of fabric swatches in the workshop, Ali can guide you, and get a feel for what could work for you.

Whilst you are welcome to book an appointment to visit us at the workshop, meetings are also available on zoom, and we’ll arrange fabric samples to be delivered straight to your door.

Velvets have come a long way. Now available in many different textures, and nearly every colour you can think of.

Florenza Damson by Designers Guild. Decadent glamour is in abundance in this dazzling design. Deconstructed florals are layered amongst geometric flecks of velvet and are anchored by the dramatic graphite ground.

Surabaya in 'Aqua' from Arley House. These suppliers will tweak your colours so you can get bespoke fabric too!

Zeus velvet from House of Hackney.

Faberge Infurno & Faberge Infurno Midi from Art of the Loom. Needle Rock's signature is to use 2/3 different fabrics on any one piece of furniture. This combination has been used on prototype 001.

For the brave amongst you, Becca Who has this fabulous collection of coloured animal prints.

You will either love him, or hate him! This is from Emma J Shipley.

Don't panic - we can do traditional too. This one is Verona from Porter & Stone.

Bolster cushions available in various lengths and widths. Fillings are fibre or feather.

We can make any shape, and size headbaord. We can include light and plug sockets. The choice is yours.

All shape and sizes of ottoman boxes can be built to your specification. Fabulous storage additions as well as extra seating if needed.

Any size and shape of footstool can be hand-crafted to your specification. This is a giant kidney-shaped footstool which has been deep-buttoned.
