Crafting Careers: Jason & Rosie’s Apprenticeship Journey at Needle Rock

At Needle Rock, we believe in passing down traditional craftsmanship and helping the next generation of upholsterers build skills that last a lifetime. Jason and Rosie, our talented apprentices, are living proof of how an apprenticeship can shape a career – giving them hands-on experience, confidence, and a future in the industry they love.

From Learning the Ropes to Mastering the Craft

Jason and Rosie both took different paths to upholstery, but they’ve found a shared passion for the craft. Jason, originally a university graduate in English Literature and History, discovered his love for upholstery after joining Needle Rock in 2021. What started as a temporary placement quickly turned into a full-time passion, leading him to a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Upholstery and later, a Level 3 in Business Improvement Techniques.

Rosie’s journey started with a focus on sewing, but she quickly embraced the world of upholstery. Over the last four years, she has developed expertise in both modern and traditional techniques, alongside completing an Industrial Sewing Machine Repair Course – a skill that keeps our workshop running smoothly. Her apprenticeship has not only built her technical abilities but has also boosted her confidence, turning her from a quiet newcomer to an integral part of the team.

Award-Winning Talent & Big Ambitions

Jason’s hard work was recognised when he won Apprentice of the Year at the Skills Academy Wales Awards 2024 and most recently, the 2024 Apprentice of the Year Award from Ceredigion County Council – a testament to his dedication and growing expertise. For both Jason and Rosie, their ambitions go beyond their current roles. They’re dreaming big, with aspirations of co-running the business together in the future.

As Jason puts it:

“We have different skill sets, and whenever one of us faces a problem, the other has an amazing solution. It’s incredibly helpful to have someone understanding to work through challenges with, and I’m so excited for what the future holds for both of us.”

The Work Behind the Success

None of this would have been possible without Ali’s dedication to shaping and mentoring them. From guiding them through complex upholstery techniques to encouraging their confidence in tackling new challenges, Ali has played a huge role in their development.

“Seeing Jason and Rosie grow into skilled upholsterers has been incredibly rewarding. The hard work, training, and long hours have all been worth it, and I couldn’t be more excited to see what the future holds for them and Needle Rock!” – Ali

Why Apprenticeships Matter

As part of Apprenticeship Week, Jason and Rosie are supporting the Genius Decision campaign, encouraging others to explore the benefits of hands-on learning. Apprenticeships offer real-world experience, specialist training, and the chance to develop a career while earning – something both Jason and Rosie have embraced wholeheartedly.

Whether it’s restoring antique furniture, mastering modern techniques, or understanding the business side of things, their journey shows that an apprenticeship is more than just training – it’s about finding passion, purpose, and a path to the future.

With an exciting future ahead, new projects in the pipeline, and two rising stars in the workshop, we can’t wait to see what’s next for Jason, Rosie, and Needle Rock!
