Child Sized Furniture
The Italian physician Maria Montessori recommended that children need the world at eye level, comprised of an environment full of order and beauty with everything having a place, and furniture that is light enough for children to move as they see fit.
Building independence contributes to a child’s sense of importance and belonging, which develops their self-awareness and aids in the building of social relationships.
It is beneficial to a child’s development and independence that the central pieces of furniture in their everyday life is child centred and safe to explore. A fabulous example of this is Alice in Wonderland sitting on the oversized furniture!
At Needle Rock we never know what’s coming through the workshop door next. We love a piece of children’s furniture, reupholstering it and giving it a new lease of life for the next generation to use.
Here’s our kiddie’s furniture commissions to date. They are all amazing – do you have a favourite? We love the idea of a child’s chair having a story to tell, becoming a family heirloom and being passed down the generations. Imagine a grandmother having once sat on the same chair as their grandchild!

A nursing chair is a chair that’s comfortable when nursing an infant. In Victorian times the nursing chair was a low seated partially upholstered chair. Nursing included caring for children as well as breastfeeding. The low seat of the chair allowed the mother, who would have been wearing a stiff corset, to interact with small children without bending over. This chair form was particularly popular in England and found primarily in upper class homes. Nursing Chair. The types of wood most frequently used were oak, rosewood or walnut. The seat was often sprung and could be button decorated or adorned with a circumferential braid or pair of braids. What about this one? It’s a proper armchair! This one has been recovered in red Welsh ‘carthen’ material, and taken from Aberystwyth to Norway, for the next generation to use.
